Golden Calf Syndrome

Where I grew up, corner confectionary shops were turned into neighborhood Christian churches. Along with barber shops and park benches, they provided spaces for neighbors to mingle.

Now I myself am not religious by nature, but have read that the god those people converse with prefers such conversations occur in the solitude of their homes. It is a more personal relationship and not one to be flaunted on street corners as if bragging, “Look at me! God loves me!”

The scriptures also remind them not to build gilded or golden images to worship in order to impress your neighbors. That, again, would be braggadocios and vain. I could be wrong, however, as I look around, I can’t help but wonder if ornate cathedrals, Trump Towers, golden lapel pins, and mega churches are not modern versions of the biblical golden calf.
