WAR OR PEACE
Nobody wants to go to war to spread democracy. Those you speaketh of are tyrants, oligarchs, fascists, greedy warmongers for profit. War has become profitable with the advent of modern weaponry. Eisenhower warned us, but we did not listen. We were too infatuated with JFK at the time. Now the military industrial complex has become so powerful that wrestling our government away from them might prove impossible, but we must try. Without new wars, their profit and power dwindles. What would America look like if we used our ever increasing defense budget, or just part of it, during a time of peace to build back our country to its former glory? We could wipe out hunger, poverty and homelessness here and make a significant dent in the rest of the world.
Would that not be more Christ like? More of what Jesus would do? If only today’s Christians were more progressive, more like what Christ taught and less like the Christians of the Dark Ages with medieval minds seeking wealth and power. You think you can’t change who you are, but you are wrong. At least that is what I hope.
I wish the warnings of Eisenhower, Goldwater and Billy Graham, all prominent Republicans of their day, were published more often so all Americans could understand what the dangers to our legacy are instead of half of our fellow Americans blindly embracing them.
Rev. Billy Graham: "I don't want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." Parade, 1981
Senator Barry Goldwater: “The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they
complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me... that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, and D.”
"Mark my word, if and when these preachers
get control of the Republican party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of G-d, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
